I’ll start by saying right now that I saw this movie in IMAX 3D and that is the ONLY way to see this movie. It is made to be viewed in this format. I’ve seen many movies in 3D and this is the best one to-date. I can’t imagine it any other way.
Now, you all know I have a bit of a crush on Brendan Fraser. So getting to see him on a giant screen in 3D was insane. I think I’ve moved from crush to full-fledged infatuation.
The plot itself is a bit far-fetched, but isn’t that why we love it. I know I do. My favorite movies and books are the ones that totally couldn’t happen… but still maybe sorta… I know I keep secretly hoping that my letter to Hogwarts got lost in the mail and will still show up one day!
The 3D effects are incredible. This is the kind of movie where you want to watch the audiences reactions almost as much as the movie itself. It’s fun to see everyone reach out and try to grab the little glowing bird. Jumping back screaming as the fish jumps right in your face. Hands up trying to block the dino slobber from splattering all over you.
But it’s more than that. Between the 3D, the giant screen, the stadium seating and the filming prowess, this movie makes you feel like you are right there IN the movie. A part of it. Falling down holes, riding run-away mining carts, running away from T-Rex, sailing across the ocean… You aren’t just watching a great movie. You are involved in a theatrical experience, almost like an amusement park ride. For those who have been on Soarin’ Over California at Disney, it’s a lot like that, only without the orange grove scent and giant fans.
A word of caution for those with young children. I took my three boys to see it. Jason (15) and Tad (12) LOVED it. Sean (6) was a bit overwhelmed by it. Some of the 3D scary elements were too realistic for him and he got quite frightened (this is a kid who has seen Jaws and loves the Mummy movies.) At one point, about 3/4s of the way thru, he announced that he wanted to leave RIGHT NOW! I wanted him to see that they make it safely out (cause DUH of course they do, this is a family movie!) So I let him sit on my lap for a bit to snuggle thru the scariest parts. When it was over and we were leaving, he announced that he liked that movie but it would be too scary for Skye (4) and that he does NOT want to go to the middle of the Earth on vacation. Ever. So I’m scratching that one off the list. Darn it.
Oh, and I call dibs on Brendan Fraser!
