The Titanic – by Sean
Sean is obsessed with The Titanic. He has checked out multiple books from his school’s library and wants to read out of them daily. He has taken to drawing pictures of the ship and diagrams of the ship from the books he’s read. He has begged me for months to rent him the movie. I don’t really feel this is an appropriate movie for an 8 year old (Kate’s boobs aside) and that thought was re-enforced after taking him to see Amelia (no boobs there, quite PG). He sobbed for about 15 minutes after the end credits rolled and he realized that she didn’t make it, even though he knew this going in (Amelia Earhart has been another one of his lesser obsessions and he talked about going to see that movie for a good two months before it came out.) Yeah, if he’s that upset over one presumably lost pilot… well, let’s just say watching the fate of over 1500 people drown… I can’t afford the amount of therapy that’s going to require for him to get over.
Fortunately, there are several documentaries on the Titanic, not just the disaster, but focusing more on the discovery of the ship. I managed to find one Titanica: IMAX (I assume it originally showed on an IMAX screen – that would have been amazing!) Anyway, exactly what he wanted. He loved it (thank you Netflix) and has quit bugging me about letting him watch the movie! However, his obsession hasn’t waned one iota.
He drew that picture a couple of days ago. It looks a lot like the last 100 he’s drawn over the past few months. But he presented this one to me with instructions. I am to give it to Grandma (my mom, who owns a hobby and toy store.) Apparently, it is blueprints to what he believes to be a really great toy that she should have made. He says “she should be able to sell it for oh, about $13.45. And a smaller pair would make nice earrings.” He was straight faced serious when he said this. And then told me he’d draw another for me to keep and use to make his costume next year. Yes, he wants to dress up as the Titanic for Halloween. Unlike Skye, who will change her mind a thousand times in the next 11 months; Sean is usually one-track minded. I’m thinking tiny little plastic people hanging off with fishing line…
